Who legally controls Osun's 30 councils is unresolved

Two sets of people claim the chairmanship of Osun's 30 local government councils: chairmen elected on the APC platform in October 2022, and chairmen elected on the PDP platform on 22 February 2025. Courts have ruled on parts of the dispute but the parties disagree over what those rulings mean, and federal allocations to the councils have been withheld throughout. Until an authoritative roster is confirmed, this site does not name individual chairmen.

Why this site does not name chairmen

Publishing a contested name as 'the chairman' would misinform residents and could unfairly represent real people. We list a name only once it is confirmed against an official source such as an OSSIEC declaration or a court order.

What would let us publish a name

  • A certified OSSIEC roster of declared chairmen for all 30 councils
  • A Supreme Court order expressly reinstating or removing a set of chairmen
  • An official Osun State Ministry of Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs directory

The two claims

Both groups are described here as they describe themselves, with the objection each faces.

APC chairmen elected October 2022

reported

Basis of the claim. Elected in the 15 October 2022 Osun LG election. That election was nullified by the Federal High Court, Osogbo on 25 November 2022 and they left office; they appealed. The APC maintains the Court of Appeal judgment of 10 February 2025 restored them.

Contested because. The Osun State Government says the Court of Appeal decided only that the PDP's suit was premature and made no consequential order reinstating anyone.

PDP chairmen elected February 2025

reported

Basis of the claim. Declared winners of all 30 councils in the OSSIEC election of 22 February 2025 and subsequently sworn in by the Osun State Government.

Contested because. The APC argues the 22 February 2025 election was unlawful and asked the Federal Government to withhold allocations to the councils.
